Writer’s Guidelines

Limit the time frame so that you can include descriptive detail – BE SPECIFIC & VIVID

Include the following points to be sure you have a complete narration

Situation/Setting/ – Paragraph 1

Conflict – Paragraph 2

Struggle – Paragraph 3

Outcome – Paragraph 4

Meaning – Paragraph 5

Consider dialogue (conversation between characters) – Dialogue must be in quotation marks. See the sample essays for examples of how to punctuate dialogue or look at a fiction book.

Give details concerning action

All of your details MUST have an order or sequence. Time is the primary factor for telling a story.

Words indicating time include first, second, then, soon, finally, while, next, later, now and before.

Essay Guidelines

Introduction: set up the situation you are going to write about – give background information. GRAB MY ATTENTION! Thesis statement must tell the reader what the event is and the significance of that event in your life. THESIS STATEMENT MUST BE THE LAST SENTENCE OF YOUR INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH.

Body paragraphs: re-create that specific event and time – use the transitional words given above as you tell your story. BE VERY SPECIFIC AND VIVID in your details

Conclusion: re-state your thesis and re-emphasize the importance of this event in your life.

Your essay should be in first-person. (I, me, my, us, we, etc.) Do NOT use the pronoun “you” unless it’s within dialogue.
