What is the central theme of “A Doll House?” This play was written in the 19th century. How might this play have been received in its day?I believe the central theme of this play, “A Doll House”, is deception. Nora, one of the main characters has good intentions, but appears very foolish and in my opinion, very annoying in her concern with money this, and money that. The whole story centralizes around this lie she told her husband, even with it being a type of “white lie” because her intentions were to save her husband’s life. She is then black mailed by a man by the name of Krogstad holding a deceitful signature over her head inexchange for keeping his job. By the end of the story the husband who she has sacrificed for proves that he himself would not sacrifice for her “...There’s no one who gives up honor for love.” (Ibsen 841). She transforms over the play from this dependent, money grubbing, nuisance to someone who you come to understand just doesn’t want to be treated like a “…doll...” (Ibsen 838) for the rest of her life. In 1879 I could see this being looked on with confusion on how this could even evolve this way, a woman acting in this fashion. I think it would better transfer to the time frame were in now, but I also don’t think it would have escalated to her enduring so much blame and disrespect before she packed and finally left.If you were putting on a production of “A Doll House,” how would you adapt it to make it relevant to a modern audience? What would you change?If I were to transform and update this into a modern play I thought about switching the main characters from the father being the source of income to the mother, and vice versa. Most of the other roles could stay the same, but I think it might serve to be more interesting if the couple was transformed into a same sex couple. Same problems could apply and the roles with in the household wouldn’t matter. With equal rights amongst being married such a high profile topic and a more common occurrence in everyday life this could stand to update it to a more modern play.
