Closed-ended questions are those questions that can be answered with a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’. Consider an example where you are the trainer for a retailer that employs a staff of outside sales persons. During a training session, you might be attempting to inform them of the company’s new route management system and how it will benefit them by helping them to make the most efficient use of their time. You could begin by posing the question directly to one of the salesmen, ‘Do you see as many customers in a day as you would like to?’ to which he or she would reply ‘yes’ or ‘no’. Closed-ended questions are particularly useful when you want to lead you audience or are pressed for time such as when there are many in attendance and a lengthy, individual discussion is not practical.
Open-ended questions are those questions that cannot be answered with a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’.
