  1. You are a consultant to the US State Department and you have been asked to evaluate the current situation in Iran.  In this five-page memo, you need to explain the intellectual background of the Iranian revolution of 1979 and its promises. Beginning with Muslim thinkers of the nineteenth century (Iranian and non-Iranian), explain the development of Muslim political thought down to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, and its impact on today’s Iranian society. Are there signs that society is changing?  In what way?  Be specific and cite specific authors and passages in Islam in Transition book (IT) to support and illustrate your essay (mainly, pp. 7-111, 229, 262, 311, 332, 361, 366, 371, 409 + 2 PDF materials posted down for Iran (19 pages) + (4 pages)).
  2. You are a consultant to the US State Department and you have been asked to look into the opening of Muslim banks in Europe. In this five-page memo, you need to retrace the history of Islamic economics before you tackle the current situation. How have Muslim thinkers tried to create successful economic systems in the last 150 years? Identify,      explain, and compare three different Muslim approaches to the economy. How have different Muslim scholars reacted to socialism and capitalism, two of the major economic ideas in the Western world? How have they tried to Islamize their economies or to make their economic systems conform to Islamic principles?  How have they adapted Islam to try to create working economies? Be specific and cite specific authors and passages in Islam in Transition book (IT) to support and illustrate your essay (mainly, pp. 228-260 and texts on socialism and capitalism on pp. 78-142).
  3. You are a consultant to the US State Department. The government wants to know whether Islam is compatible with democracy and democratic pluralism.  In this five-page memo, you need to introduce US officials to internal debates between Muslim scholars (in and outside the Islamic World) over whether or not Islam is compatible with      democracy. What are their major arguments for and against a democratic Muslim society? What features in Islamic tradition support the concept of democracy? Does Islamic tradition contain the resources for another form of multiculturalism? Do Muslims redefine democracy to make it compatible with their Islamic visions? If so, how?  Or, do they redefine Islam to make it compatible with democracy? If so, how? Can Muslims (outside the Islamic world) live      in a secular democratic society? Be specific and cite specific authors and passages in Islam in Transition to support and illustrate your essay (mainly, pp. 261-382 and pp. 473-507).

Note: providing quotes from the documents as evidence is essential, but, please, do not forget to add your own words and analysis, and the page numbers. Explain each reference that you make, particularly why it is relevant to the question you are answering. This is especially important in your Islam in Transition book (IT). However, it required that you use complete sentences, not fragments.

In general:

  • Do not use “it seems,” “I believe”
  • Do not use contractions of any kind.
  • Do not use the passive voice. Instead of writing “Islam was understood by Muslims,” please write “Muslims understood Islam…”
  • Do not use fragments (your sentences should be complete: subject, verb, complement).
  • Avoid run-on-sentences. In other words, your sentences should not be too long! Do not repeat “and…and…and…and” or “which…, which…, which…” in the same sentence.
  • No “I,” “you,” “we,” “us.”
  • Do not use progressive present or past.  Instead of writing “he was defending,” please write “he defended.”
  • Do not use the semicolon (;). You do not know how to use it.
