Stepping out of my first plane ride, I experience an epiphany of new culture, which seems
to me as a whole new world. Buzzing around my ears are conversations in an unfamiliar
language that attracted me. It then struck me that after twenty four hours of a plane ride that I
finally arrived in The United States of America, a country full of new opportunities. It was this
moment that I realized how diverse and big this world is. This is the story of my new life in
America.
The first twelve years of my life were spent in the most beautiful and calm place,
Bangladesh. Throughout this time, I was a social butterfly and loved to learn new things.
Things started to change however when I moved to the United States. It was July 30, 2010, when
I experienced a majority of events in my life for the first time. This was the first time I had
boarded a plane, had traveled a great distance.I was in New York! I couldn’t believe it, I was
here! Consequently five weeks after I settled in, I started going to Middle School. The people I
met were surprisingly nice to me, but of course it wasn’t long until I was being mocked due to
the way I spoke and where I came from. Without a doubt there was a time where I struggled, it
was hard to learn how to speak English properly. It took me three months to be able to hold a
normal conversation with anyone, may it be students or teachers. By the Middle of 7th grade, I
almost had it- it was my goal to learn how to speak English fluently. However that wasn’t my
main issue at the time. It didn’t occur to me until one day during physical education that a girl
was mimicking me; I had never been so angry. I had to confront her about it, and for once in my
life,
I struggled to learn basic phrases before the start of school, phrases such as “May I use the
restroom?” and “What is this?” After timeless tries, my aunt, who already knew English, came
up with an idea to write the phrases down on pieces of paper. I would have to hand the teacher
the pieces of paper which matched what I needed in order to communicate with her. The idea
made me feel embarrassed, but knowing that it was the only way possible for me to get my needs
from my teacher. When I came here, it was difficult for me to adjust with the culture. My family
has always influenced me to stay positive and work hard. I decided to come to college to achieve
my goals and make my parents proud. In my High school years, I was confused about what to do
in future, and how I am going to find out what interests me the most. One day, I decided to take a
class which was Computer science. At first, I was struggling and trying to find a way to get
better. After practicing a lot, I have been successful, and I loved the Computer Science class. I
have decided to stick with Computer Science because it interests me the most. This class have
influenced my ideas about what I want to do in the future. I am glad that I took the class in High
School that helped me to find my destination in future.
I came from a country where we had to pay to get education. When I came to America , I
saw people were receiving financial support for their education . That motivated me to take
advantage of the opportunity that I am getting. That had impacted me of who I am today and
what I want to do in the future. One of the challenges I had to overcome is that to learn English.
After I came to America , I knew a little bit English. I had to be determined and learn vocabulary
everyday to get better. I learned that with determination, willingness and interest I can be
successful. I believe if I work hard, be determined and improve my work ethics I will be able to
grow as a person and be a successful student.
