The Equal Protection in Physical Activities Introduction In 1972, women made history in sports. Through the enactment of Title IX, girls would find equality among boys on the court, field and any other sport related activities. For years, women had been discriminated against in general education physical education.
Title IX was an initiation that not only helped bridge the gap in male and female participation in sports, it should be recognized for the role it played in role that the Equal Protection Clause of the United States Constitution has played in opening previously all-male sports to women and girls (Fields, S., 2003).
We were now seeing equal protection that would help drive classification in sports programs based on gender as well as gender identification. Legalities in Classification There were many issues facing the rise of women participating in sport programs. Women were fragile, petite, and likely to be physically injured if they allowed them to participate in sports that required some physical contact.
During the twentieth century, women were encouraged to participate in other sports that were not as competitive as those that males competed in. As the century evolved, so did women and their fight to be accepted into the world of sports as they saw fit.
