For these and other reasons, the Church maintains that the embryo is a human life and always must be respected as such.”(059) Zalot discusses the point of view of the Church that they do not accept that an embryo is just a mass of cells that is a part of the mother’s body. Reasons for this include that, as stated in the book, “First, we know from science that the embryo is its own separate being; it is not a part of the mother’s body. Second, we also know from science that the embryo possess its own unique geneTc make-up-its own DNA-from concepTon.” (059) ±hese are reasons as to which the Church believes the human embryo is not just a mass of cells and that it is its own human life form that should be granted special rights. Zalot also discusses that the Church does not have an o²cial posiTon on whether or not the soul is infused at concepTon. Since there is no o²cial posiTon on this ma³er, the Church does not use this as a basis for its teachings.
