This course is entirely online. Instead of traditional face-to-face lecture format you will engage and learn the course content through guided tutorials, diagnostic testing, and a variety of online activities designed to teach the material through action and sight. Completing an online course successfully does require good self-motivation and time management skills. It is your responsibility to sign in regularly to check on your assignments and stay on schedule. Assignments and testing are to be completed on or before the designated due dates and it is your responsibility to regularly check your assignment board to make sure that all assignments are completed on or before that due date. Once the due date is passed, assignments will not be accepted and you will receive no credit for that assignment.

An Important Word About Technology and Support

Things are going to happen when technology is involved, and it is not always good. There are sometimes going to be compatibility issues with your computer’s software and/or hardware. Two things that you should be aware of that may save you from a few tech headaches: a) When you log in the first time notice at the bottom of the page the link titled System Check. Click on it to determine if you need to download any software/plug-ins updates or additions on your computer to effectively run the LaunchPad package. Links and instructions will be given for necessary downloads. b) The Firefox browser seems to work best for the LaunchPad platform although it is compatible with Safari and Chrome.

A Few Words About Your Textbook

The textbook we are using for this course, David G. Myers & C. Nathan DeWall’s Psychology Twelfth Edition in Modules, is the centerpiece of the course. All assignments revolve around your textbook readings. David Myers authors the best selling line of Introductory Psychology textbooks in the world and for good reason. I usually find textbooks boring, impersonal, encyclopedic in nature, and written in an unnecessary, mind-numbing jargon – a good prescription for insomniacs but detrimental to the learning process. Myers’ textbook is different. He is a gifted writer and is passionate about his subject matter. He writes in a way that is warm, personal, humorous, using techniques of storytelling, provoking thought, and relating the course content to everyday life and other areas of study. At the same time he retains the scientific rigor and details of the field. Do read and play with the book and you will come away with a sound understanding of the field of Psychology. I hope you will enjoy the text as much as I have!

Your textbook is also unusual in organization and format. Typically, General Psychology textbooks are organized in about fifteen 50-page chapters, covering the major topics and subfields of Psychology. Instead your textbook is organized in fifty modules, each about 15 pages. The modular approach allows you to digest and learn the material in smaller chunks.

Grades

Final grades will be based on the quality of your performance on three major components of this course:

Descriptions of each of these components will follow. Your Exams will be weighted as 50% of your final grade. Learning Curve Tutorials/Module Quizzes and Course Activity Assignments will each be worth 25% of your final grade. See page 7 for the grade scale.

Exams

The will be four exams in this class. All exams will be given online through LaunchPad. Each exam is non-cumulative, testing only the material covered in that section of the course. The textbook readings will be primarily sampled but your test will also include material that is presented in online assignments (e.g., videos, PsychSim exercises).

The format of the exams will be a combination of multiple choice and short essay questions. The first two exams are worth 100 points each and the last two will be worth 75 points each. See the course outline at the end of this syllabus for the time frames on when the exam is to be taken. These will also be posted under the Assignment and Announcement sections of your LaunchPad.

LearningCurve, Module Quiz, & Course Activities

For every Module assigned to read you will be instructed to follow a required sequence of assignments: 1) Read the Module. 2) Complete the LearningCurve Tutorial. 3. Complete the Course Activities. 4) Take the Module Quiz. This sequence will be the backbone of the learning process for this course. LearningCurve is based on the latest findings from learning and memory research. LearningCurve is game like in nature keeping you engaged while helping you learn and remember the contents of each module. It combines adaptive question selection, personalized study plans, and immediate feedback. It is a wonderful way of learning and remembering the course content. If you take the LearningCurve process seriously, you will see improved performance on exams and greatly enhanced retention of course material. LearningCurve adapts to your individual level of preparedness in two ways. The first involves question selection. There are thousands of questions in LearningCurve, divided into three levels: easy, medium and hard. If you answer a question without any help, your next question will be at a higher level. If you need a small amount of help but eventually get the question right, your next question will be at the same level. If you are unable to answer the question, your next question will be from a lower level. Second, and just as important, the game-like aspects of LearningCurve ensure that the less you know about the content covered in an activity, the more questions you will need to answer to complete the activity. A student who already has the material down pat will be able to rack up points quickly and breeze right through. On the other hand, a student who is less prepared coming in will need to ask for more hints, make more incorrect guesses, and/or give up on more questions, and will consequently have to answer far more questions to reach the Target Score. Importantly, though, if you make it to the Target Score (and you will if you keep working at it) you will be rewarded with full marks (a grade of 100%) for the activity.

After completing the LearningCurve assignment you are then required to take a Module Quiz for the assigned Module. This is a multiple-choice quiz testing you on your retention of the material from the designated Module. You will receive a % grade based on the number of correct responses.

If you successfully complete the LearningCurve for each Module assigned you will receive a 10-point credit. For the Module Quiz you will receive a percentage of a maximum 20- point credit based on your test score (e.g., if you score 75% you will receive 15 points).

Both the LearningCurve tutorial and Module Quiz will show up on your weekly Assignment Section on Launchpad along with the due dates.

You will also be assigned a series of required activities to help you actively learn the major concepts in each of your assigned Modules. These activities will help visualize and feel the material in this course in a meaningful way, promoting critical thinking and ultimately improving retention and understanding of course content. For each module you will find a set of activities to complete in the Assignment Section of the LaunchPad. For many of the assignments you will be credited points for successful completion. Others will be graded on the basis of the quality and depth of your work. When an assignment is posted on LaunchPad, you will be given the point total for that assignment, whether it is for credit or grade, and due date.

Make-up Exams & Assignments

Because you have much flexibility built into the time and day in which you are to turn in your assignments and take your exams, make-up arrangements or due extensions will be extremely rare in this course. Make-up exams will be given under special circumstances with permission of instructor. If under special circumstances permission is given to take the exam after the due date there will be late penalty imposed. Any exam taken after the scheduled date will be eligible for a maximum grade of 80% (any score over 80% will be given a score of 80% in the grade book). If you wish to take a make- up exam or extend a deadline you must notify me on or before the scheduled date.

Please Note:

a) Plagiarism and cheating are subject to disciplinary action, usually resulting in the offender receiving an “F” (0.0) grade in the course or at the very least a 0.0 grade on the assignment. Particularly relevant in an online course is the issue of cutting and pasting from other sources. On tests and assignments if any material is cut and pasted from another source (e.g., articles, textbooks, online papers or resources) it will treated as a violation. There are ways to determine and document this action and the will be used in this course.

Grading Scale

At the end of the course each of the three major components (Exams, LearningCurves/Module Quizzes, and Course Activities) will be assigned a percentile grade on a 100-point scale. Each percentile grade is calculated by dividing the total points earned by the students divided by the total points assigned. The three percentile scores will then be weighted as follows: Exams 50%, LearningCurves/Module Quizzes 25%, Course Activities 25%. The following scale will be used in assigning your final grade:
