Assisted Suicide: Ethical Viewpoints

There are many different viewpoints relating to physician-assisted suicide. According to Dougherty (1997), “compassion and autonomy are the two most common arguments used in the favoring of assisted suicide, whereas, arguments against it suggest that providing autonomy of the right to suicide under some conditions and not others is unethical.” Religious views have a sizeable impact on individual viewpoints. “Faiths such as Christian, Muslim, Jewish, as well as other groups have the belief that since God provides us with life, so only God should be able to take it away” (Robinson, 2010, para 3). How do different views regarding physician-assisted suicide compare? This paper will discuss the philosophy and worldview of a hospital administrator, a spiritual leader, a nurse, and a community member. Philosophy and Worldview of a Hospital Administrator The hospital administrator interviewed is the Director of one of the units at an acute care hospital and would prefer to remain anonymous. In her personal opinion, she does not believe in physician-assisted suicide, stating that it is against her morals and spiritual beliefs. She states that she is a Seventh Day Adventist and believes that “life is not ours, and that it is a gift from God.” (LS, 2015) She further states, “Only God can decide when our life here on earth should end”. (LS, 2015) As a healthcare provider, LS states that she is obligated to promote health, save lives and care for those in need. Being in administration, with the recent passing of the physician-assisted suicide law in her state, she realizes that at some point she may be faced with the dilemma of being consulted regarding this.
