This project utilizes, but is not limited to, previously learned knowledge of leadership skills, principles of teaching/learning, change process, group process, team building, collaboration, health care policy and delivery systems, quality improvement, evidence-based care, diversity, nursing roles, information technology and systems, population-based care and ethical/legal issues. Students taking this course must be registered nurses.
Course objectives:
- To identify an area of interest on a clinical topic or healthcare organizational topic that builds on professional experiences or scholarship.
- To review the pertinent nursing research literature regarding evidence-based practice and develop a Capstone project topic that has relevance to nursing practice.
- To demonstrate the scholarship of practice and disseminate knowledge among colleagues and peers through a paper and presentation about the Capstone project topic
This RN was able to identify an area of interest based on professional experiences. The weekly discussions and Capstone project allowed the RN to review many evidence-based articles. This RN was able to create a paper and presentation through research to share among her classmates. The research of articles built on this RN’s current experience. The project allowed this RN to incorporate problem-solving skills and find a solution to the topic issue.
Individual course goals:
- Find a topic pertinent to work environment
- Propose a plan that can help change this RN’s work environment
- Learn how to better apply evidence-based practice to this RN’s career
The three goals provided were accomplished during this course. This RN found a topic relevant to her work environment. In this case, it was patient safety and satisfaction related to hospital staffing.
Two plans were identified to help change this RN’s work environment. These two plans were examined in detail in the Capstone paper. This RN was able to identify ways to improve hospital staffing and provided these solutions to her manager.
Between the weekly discussions and the Capstone presentation, this RN applied evidence-based practice weekly in her studies. In Week 3, students were to find three articles that could be used in the Capstone project. This helped the RN use evidence-based practice.
Assignments:
Assignments included weekly discussions the first seven weeks, which allowed students to explore tools to help improve their Capstone Project. Attached is a discussion post from Week 3 of the class. This discussion was important to this RN because it allowed her to research evidence-based practice on the topic of her Capstone project. It provided valuable information used in this RN’s Capstone project.
The Capstone Project consisted of writing a paper on a topic of the student’s choice and creating a presentation. The topic had to be relevant to nursing practice. The Capstone paper allowed the RN to study the current problem of nursing staffing and the effects it has on patients’ safety and satisfaction of their care. The RN also was able to articulate plans to fix the problem, along with which plans would be viable in her work environment.
