Course objectives:
Describe the process of writing from idea development through publication
Identify the elements of effective professional presentations
Explore the components of a professional portfolio
Course objectives were met by this RN through doing the required assignments. Learning how to eliminate “jargon” from papers and presentations is something that will be used in the future by this RN. Eliminating this jargon made this RN’s papers stronger compared to past semesters. This class has made this RN consider writing and presenting in the future.
Individual course goals:
Improve professional writing skills-This goal was accomplished through discussions in Weeks 4 and 5. Students were able to choose a topic about writing to present to the class. Since every student chose a different topic, I was able to to gather information to improve my writing skills. The topics varied from citation to grammar.
Learn how to make a professional poster-This goal was accomplished through watching required videos of professional posters. The videos gave this RN a better understanding of what a professional poster was. This RN was then able to use her understanding by creating a professional poster.
Become more comfortable with presentations (creating & presenting)-This goal was accomplished by doing the required reading regarding PowerPoint presentations. This RN created a 5 slide Power Point presentation. Later in the class, this RN added audio to the presentation after learning from the required reading.
Course assignments:
Course assignments consisted of several discussions on the discussion board and a group assignment. The weekly discussions are based on the assigned reading (journal articles, web articles, and other sources). Students are required to read all discussion postings in their assigned group and respond to all questions from the instructor and other students. The weekly discussion posts allow the students demonstrate their critical thinking skills.
The group assignment was to create a poster presentation. This RN was group leader. Tasks included keeping in touch with the other classmates, creating due dates, and posting the presentation to the discussion board. The poster presentation was on guided imagery in post-op care. This RN learned the time it takes to create a poster presentation. This RN also learned that one does not need 30+ years of nursing experience to create a poster or have a writing published.
