Theories and models are used to understand health behaviors. The course includes the role of the nurse; national health objectives; health literacy, education, and counseling; transcultural considerations; factors affecting health promotion; and specific health promotion strategies.
Course Objectives:
- Utilize critical thinking to explore theories & models for promoting & protecting health & preventing injury & disease across the life span
- Apply the Nation’s Health Objectives as outlined in Healthy People 2020 to provide assessment, planning & evaluation of health status & behavior risks for individuals, families & communities
- Synthesize concepts related to health literacy & apply them in educating & counseling diverse clients
- Develop the nursing role through assessing, implementing, & evaluating effective health promotion strategies
- Foster professional development through self-directed learning which is goal directed & measurable
Individual Course Goals:
- Develop an effective teaching plan for the community which goes along with Healthy People 2020 goals. This goal was accomplished by developing an effective teaching plan for the appropriate age group.
- Have a better understanding of theories & models of health promotion. This goal was accomplished by doing the necessary reading about health promotion theories & models, such as Nola Pender’s theory and the Gordon framework. Understanding of these subjects were evaluated by providing discussions about these health promotion topics.
- Take knowledge gained in class by applying it to work. This goal was accomplished by providing more patient education regarding medication, diet, and diagnoses. The topics learned in this class made this RN more aware of the importance of patient education and health promotion.
Course Assignments:
Course assignments were class discussions. The students were encouraged to interact with other posts. The discussions required critical thinking of the students.
Projects:
Projects included an ongoing health teaching plan. Parts of the project included the following:
