Concepts and issues for Professional Nursing Practice is a three credit hour course that focuses on nursing concepts and theory, nursing process, and the history of nursing as it relates to the development of professional nursing and the role of the professional nurse.

Course Objectives:

  • Develop personal goals for professional development and lifelong learning.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the philosophy and conceptual framework of the baccalaureate nursing program at Kent State University.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of metaparadigms/paradigms in the discipline of nursing.
  • Develop an understanding of the present and evolving roles of the professional nurse.
  • Identify historical and societal influences on the development of the contemporary roles of the professional nurse.
  • Identify major concepts of nursing theorists and their influences on nursing practice and the student’s individual practice of nursing.
  • Demonstrate the applications of the professional communication and the nursing process with individuals, families, and groups in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Identify ethical and legal issues affecting clinical nursing practice and specific population groups.
  • Demonstrate the ability to utilize critical thinking in decision making and clinical judgments.

These course objectives were accomplished by hard work and doing the assignments each week. Assignments included comparing ADN nurses to BSN nurses, doing case studies, and researching nursing roles. The assignments allowed the students to utilize critical thinking in the course. It also promoted utilizing critical thinking in the workplace. The assignments tied in with the workplace, which allowed this RN to accomplish the individual goal of applying the knowledge learned in this course to her job.

Individual Course Goals:

  1. Develop a better understanding of the roles of a professional nurse. This goal was accomplished through doing the necessary reading each week, which ranged from reading about ethical issues to the contemporary roles nurses have today. Students’ understanding of the subject was evaluated through the discussions posted each week.
  2. Apply the knowledge learned in this course to job. This goal was accomplished by the ability to apply the knowledge to this RN’s job. This included researching my employer’s policies regarding substance abuse, for example. Students were given case studies to review, which made this RN more aware of how patient’s may perceive words and actions. This made this RN approach patients and their families differently, having this knowledge.
  3. Develop a better understanding of the history of nursing. This goal was accomplished by reading about Clara Barton, Florence Nightingale, and other historical nursing figures. Understanding of this topic was evaluated by posting a discussion on the discussion board. There was an ongoing project regarding nursing theorists that provided more information about nursing history.

Projects:
Projects included weekly discussions and an ongoing nursing theory research project. Both the discussions and project required the students to think critically. The discussions encouraged the students to interact with others, thus creating actual discussions. The instructor responded to these discussion posts to encourage critical thinking. The nursing theory research project was a group project. This allowed the students to work as a team. This RN was responsible for the basic tenets.
