). With RN’s in high demand,
it is even more important now that we retain the ones we have currently licensed andexperienced, along with encouraging and helping the new ones. MacKusick and Minick state thatthere is little research being done on why some nurses are no longer work as an RN after just afew short years of becoming certified.MacKusick and Minick began a research project in 2007 to understand the factors that are
influencing RN’s to leave clinical nursing. A sample size of 10 licensed RN’s with a minimum
of a year of clinical experience and who had also not practiced within the last six months prior to
the interviewing process. These ten RN’s
involved 2 males and 8 females, ages 22-59. 70% wereCaucasian and 50% had an education level of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) (pg. 337).Interviews were given and transcribed to conclude three themes as to why a nurse is likely to quitworking as clinical nurse. The first reason given was unfriendly work place with horizontalhostility (HH). The second and third conclusion involved emotional distress andfatigue/exhaustion.The
research method performed in the journal “Why are Nurses Leaving”, consisted of
qualitative methods.
