A Concept Analysis of Cultural Competence within the Nursing Profession Before one can write a concept analysis, one must understand what a concept is. A concept is one or two words that convey meaning, perhaps an idea, among individuals within a discipline. Common concepts relevant to nursing include caring, healing, comfort, and diversity. A concept analysis helps communicate the meaning of the word or phrase. Concepts are defined by words that allow people to communicate their reality in a meaningful way through the senses (i.e. seen, heard, felt, smelled, or tasted) (Verderber, Verderber, & Sellnow, 2010).

The goal is to get all individuals of the same discipline, on the same page about the meaning of a concept. Once that happens, the concept can be used to build hypotheses for research and theory. However, some of those concepts within nursing are viewed differently from the nursing perspective as opposed to the patient perspective. It is important to view the situation from the patient’s standpoint to be able to assist the patient in a manner in which they can accept and utilize the help and resources that nurses provide.

It is important for nurses to display cultural competence when caring for patients and recognize any barriers the client may have in their life that is preventing them from achieving optimal health or working towards a better life for themselves and their loved ones. Miskin, Matthews, Wallace, and Fox (2015) state that nearly 13 percent of United States residents are foreign born.

This number is expected to exceed 40 percent by the year 2025 (Miskin, Matthews, Wallace, & Fox, 2015). With these staggering numbers, it is imperative for healthcare workers to be culturally diverse, as this can have a significant impact on the healthcare outcomes of individuals, families, and communities (Miskin et al., 2015).

Cultural competence in nursing stems from the transcultural theory postulated by Madeleine Leininger in the 1950’s. Her theory states that research and practice should focus on cultural care values, beliefs, and practices of the client, which stimulates the nurse to design holistic actions and decisions based on the patient’s needs (Sitzman & Eichelberger, 2011).
