Idiosyncratic deals as Rousseau (2005) describers are “voluntary, personalized agreements of a nonstandard nature negotiated between individual employees and their employers regarding terms benefiting each party.” So those deals that are personalised, mutually beneficial and are non standard in nature would fall in this category. Some of the examples of this kind of deals are an employee negotiating for flexible working hours when usually offer no such flexibility, an employee negotiates for better pay and some perks when company wants him/her to transfer to other facility, negotiating for working on some projects, employee asking for change in job profile or for working on some specific projects.
One comes across such deals during the recruiting process of new employees. During the interview with a prospective employer, an employee negotiates for his/her salary that is non standard in nature and varies from employee to employee and employer to employer. Usually employers decide a range for the salary to be offered for a prospective employee and exact salary structure is based on the skill set of the employee. Employees usually have to negotiate with the employers based on their own judgments of skill sets, power they feel that they have for negotiating the salary and many other factors that play into such situations and negotiations.
