1) Storming is when struggles over power and control break out and the boundaries of permissible behavior get tested. (As, of course, they must). Factions form, personalities clash, antagonistic positions are taken, contentious attitudes are assumed, and almost no one concedes a point without first fighting tooth and nail to defend it. True, this image of the prototypical human group as a battleground is a little extreme. But if you consider the process of group formation in groups to which you belong or have belonged – and if you look beneath the veil of civility – you are likely to see quite a bit of strongly-felt resentment, cynicism, sarcasm, invective and innuendo. It is worth considering the possibility that much of the vehemence and violence that attends our personal and social lives at all levels of organization reflects our failure to take properly to heart some of the basic lessons that decades of action research in the area of group dynamics have taught us.
