Again, I know this assignment description is rather lengthy, but please read everything. I’m making an effort to spell out my expectations in detail, and it is those expectations that guide my grading.
General Guidelines (these should be familiar):
For your second paper, I’m asking for 3-4 pages in MLA format (not including your Works Cited page). Write within those limits. I’m a bit of a stickler about formatting, so make sure to use an appropriate heading and 1” margins. Consult the Purdue Owl website if you’re not sure. Use line numbers for your parenthetical citations in the body of your paper and include a full citation at the end. For this paper, you are only required to cite one text—the text you choose to analyze—but you are welcome to pull in more and will certainly want to include a citation for any outside information your bring to your argument.
Topic:
You have a fair amount of flexibility here. In short, choose one of the texts we’ll have read before the paper due date and explore one aspect of that text. As far as the aspect of the play you choose, I leave it to you. You might be interested in exploring a motif throughout the play. You might want to close read a single passage as you did for your previous paper. You could run a deeper analysis of a character or two parallel characters. You might want to press upon a literary device or read the play in light of relevant historical information (this one will require extra sources). Perhaps you’d like to explore the ethical, political, or social valences of a play (or even a section of the play or a single character). Don’t, however, try to do too much. A good paper will be focused and deep in reading, rather than broad and cursory.
Argument:
Offer a compelling reading of whatever aspect of the play you select. That doesn’t mean that you have to offer the one, true definitive reading, but you should be able to justify your interpretation. Although there’s no single “right” reading of a text, there are certainly wrong ones.
Make sure you’re not just extolling or denigrating your selected text. For example, a thesis that suggests that the Inferno, even if as it couches its vision of damnation in terms of heavenly justice, is much more preoccupied with Dante’s personal vendettas would for a compelling paper, and such a thesis would by extension indict Dante to at least some degree. On the other hand, a thesis like “Dante is a sexist pig” is too broad and normative to really support. By the same token, “Dante masterfully constructs this passage” is an uninteresting tribute, but something like “Dante’s animal imagery underscores the bestial nature of the Inferno’s violent sinners” offers the potential to show his literary mastery without simply complimenting it.

Qualities of an A paper:
Clarity: This one is at the top for a reason. Your paper must have a clearly identifiable thesis. Your paragraph structure must be logical. Pore over your sentences to make sure that they aren’t ambiguous. Although it might not be fair, if I can’t follow your points, that’s your problem.
Argumentative Focus: This aspect follows clarity closely. Make sure that you are going beyond stating the obvious in your paper, but don’t reach for a position that is indefensible. Use pointed topic sentences to guide me in your argument. If you’re talking about something that doesn’t address your position, it probably only belongs in your paper as a footnote, if at all.
Close Reading: Even though your paper no longer needs to be focused on a specific passage, you still need to close read! You’ll only win me over by citing from the text and analyzing the language you cite (and don’t just paraphrase it for me.) Read deeply—you may want to avail yourself of the OED to look up word etymologies and usage history.
Significance: Although your reading may not change the world, it should help a reader come to some greater—or different—understanding of the text. Your conclusion is an excellent place to argue for the larger importance of whatever smaller issue you may have tackled.
Style: Note that clarity is first on this list and style is last. Don’t sacrifice the reader’s comprehension of your arguments for poetic bombast (unfortunately, many academics fail to provide a good example for you in their own writing). With that said, carefully wrought prose can aid both clarity and reader enjoyment. Excise repetition. Use your introduction to draw your reader into your argument. Don’t be afraid to adopt a writerly voice; just don’t mistake “voice” to mean “snark” and “self-referentiality.”
