Think about Fela Kuti, the documentary film Music is the Weapon, and our analysis of Teacher Don’t Teach Me Nonsense. Fela used many aspects of music and music culture to voice his discontent with the Nigerian government, aftermath of the civil war, polution, corruption, violence, and the oil industry. He used the social aspects of music, for example creating a scene at his club The Shrine to try to redefine what it meant to be Nigerian and to develop new definitions of African identity and to create a following for both his ideas and for his political campaign while running for president.

Fela Kuti is not the only one for whom “Music is the Weapon.” A lot is happening in the world right now.

**POST TO DISCUSSION BOARD**

1) I’d like you to choose a current issue that matters to you and find a musician / song / band etc. that addresses that issue.

2) Give some background about the social issue.

3) Post an audio or video clip of a musical work that addresses that issue.

4) Use the soundscape approach (sound, setting, significance) to analyze the musical work.

5) Provide your own opinion as to the effectiveness of the musical work / musician / band in relying their message. For example, do you believe that music is an effective means of social protest? Would this musical work be enough to sway your opinion about the issue being addressed? Why or why not? What are some benefits of using music for this function? What are some limitations? Etc…

Here are a couple sites that can provide an example of how to describe the intersection between music / politics / and social protest.

These two songs are older, more of a historical analysis. If you can find something current, that is best, but I will accept historic analysis too. Some ideas could be music relating to our upcoming election, current world conflicts, #blacklivesmatter, environmental issues, etc…
