*Your paper needs to be written in MLA format, with MLA style documentation of sources.

*A couple points about the Indian tribes in Ramona: The two which we see most often are the Luiseno Indians (the Pechanga Band of the Luisenos was in Temecula Valley) and the Kumeyaay or Diegueno Indians (the San Pascual Band of the Kumeyaay/Diegueno tribe was the one in the San Pasqual Valley). Alessandro (being from the Temecula area) was APPARENTLY a Luiseno. At the end of the book, Jackson is writing about the Cahuilla Indians; they are the ones who nursed Ramona back to health.

For this assignment I want you to pick one of the Indian tribes Helen Hunt Jackson writes about and consider whether her portrayal of Indian life during that time period (1840-1865) is accurate. Look particularly at  the Luiseno, Cahuilla, Diegueno, or Cupeno tribe–the groups she seems to be focusing on. There are a number of aspects of the tribe which you can research:

The lifestyle of the members independent of the whites—housing, economics, etc.

How it interacted with whites.

Whether land was lost (taken) in the way that Jackson portrays.

What happened after a tribe lost its traditional land.

Your introduction should summarize Jackson’s portrayal of this tribe–make sure your summary refers to specific passages in Jackson’s book. Your thesis statement will then tell me how accurate her perspective is.

You can find a lot of information by doing a subject search for one of the tribes on the library’s website—try the catalog and databases. You can also use information from a documentary film about the period, or find information on a web site on American history. At least one of your sources, though, must be a book.

Some of the things you will be evaluated on:

How accurately you represent Jackson’s perspective.

Whether you have a clear thesis statement which tells me the relation of your findings to

Jackson’s vision.

How well you synthesize your findings into a clearly organized portrayal of the tribe.

The depth of your research.

How interesting your findings are.

For this assignment it is essential that you use quotes to illustrate your points (be sure you cite your quotes using MLA style documentation and include a Works Cited page—which does not count toward the six pages).
