Health Informatics combines the world of health care, business, and information technology. Combining these worlds help to ensure that patients receive higher quality of care when obtaining treatment from health care professionals. In this paper, the history of health informatics will be discussed. The discussion will include the major milestones most important in the creation and evolution of health informatics. The paper will also include five major milestones in health informatics and the description of each. Most Important Milestones in the Creation and Evolution of Health Informatics

There are several milestones that helped in the creation and evolution of health informatics. Those milestones are computers and electronic medical records. “Initially computer use in health care was confined to the computer’s primary function, that of calculating, and did not foresee its impact on clinical practice and health care,” (Marini, 2005, p. 1). With the invention of computers, staff can check for prescriptions needed, get assistance in surgery, check on patient records, and for accessing patient data information. What one has to understand is that without being able to check a patients’ data information, one will not know exactly what the patient has been treated for before or if he or she has any existing illnesses.

Before computers, patient records were kept on paper in a filing cabinet or in storage. This leads one to the invention of Electronic Medical Records. “EHRs are much more than computer-based versions of paper medical records or stand-alone data repositories, and their successful implementation is not without challenges,” (Detmer, 2009, p. 1). Electronic medical records came along when records were hard to keep and gave health care professionals an easier way to maintain patient records. With electronic medical records in place, it is easier for records to be filed, retrieved, and made good use of by anyone who is treating patients. These records assist health care professions because it is easier to send records to associate hospitals and other treating physicians in a faster way. With the invention of computers and electronic medical records, health informatics has come a long way. There are several other milestones that contribute to that improvement.

The other three milestones that contribute to the improvement of health informatics are the introduction of Medicare insurance, the development of the computer system MYCIN, and the development of CPRS. Medicare is a governmental insurance program created to assist the elderly with his or her medical insurance needs. With the creation of Medicare, health care professionals could bill automatically for services provided. With the automatic billing, those professionals could receive payments for his or her services more rapidly without waiting months for a payment.

MYCIN is a support system developed at Stanford University. MYCIN was “built to assist physicians in the diagnosis of infectious diseases,” (University of Northern Iowa Computer Science, 2012, p. 1). MYCIN assists health care professionals in identifying the bacteria behind the infectious diseases, what type of antibiotic will be needed to treat the disease, and the dosage of that antibiotic that will be needed as well. This computer system was important because certain diseases were new and the health care professionals had no idea what exactly they were and how to treat them. Feeding the information into that system allowed the health care professionals to discover what the disease was and how to treat it.

Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) is a computer-based program utilized to show a patients’ health at a glance. CPRS is “a graphic interface that creates a long-term view of a patient’s health record,” (University of Illinois at Chicago, 2011, p. 1). The………………….
