Programs that provide funding to care for the elderly in the United States are greatly needed and are exemplified in the increasing change in the demographics of our country. As stressed in the film, Living Old, those over the age of eighty-five are members of the fastest growing population in the United States. Thirty years has gone by since the film was created and it’s creators predicted that in those thirty years, the amount of people who are over sixty-five willdouble, making up twenty percent of the population in the United States (Living Old,Chapter 1). The film also touches on the various medical advances that allow doctors to better treat illnesses and injuries that would often, in the past, be fatal. However, these medical developments have resulted in greater numbers of people who live well into older adulthood and who also require continual care. As people live longer, they are more likely to develop chronic conditions, over sudden illnesses, which often render them disabled in some way and eventually lead to death. Due to the lack of programs available to care for these individuals, the overall consensus of the doctors featured in the film was that our healthcare system is unprepared to provide health care for these older adults over the coming years. As it stands, our current health care system is understaffed, under-equipped, and commonly is unable to offer extensive care that is required to treat chronic conditions. As the elderly population continues to increase, this absence of resources will only continue to get worse unless better programs are established. One example shown in the film of the already failing healthcare system we have in the U.S. today is that of Carmen and her father. Carmen’s father became chronically ill to the point

where he required a feeding tube and full-time care was a necessity. Although Carmen’s insurance covered the cost of two in home assistance, it wasn’t enough and Carmen decided to quit her job and learned the skills necessary in order to provide care around the clock so her father would not have to enter an assisted living facility. Carmen’s father was incredibly blessed to have such stable familial support but many other elderly people, present and future, will not beso lucky. Existing programs such as Medicaid may not be able to continue to provide substantial support and as more and more elderly are seeking assistance, resources will just become more scarce and unreliable. For a person like Carmen’s father, familial support was necessary to foster positive adaption to his environment and if responsibility of his care was left exclusively to our healthcare system, he might not have been able to adapt and his health could have further suffered. In order to provide adequate healthcare for the growing amount of elderly who are living longer and who are developing chronic conditions that require extensive care, more funding must be allocated to provide sufficient support to promote overall well being among older adults. PART 2: Competence-Environmental PressThe Competence-Environmental Press Model illustrates how the demands of the environment, stressors that exist in any living environment, interact with one’s level of competency to create adaptive or maladaptive behavior (Sataria, 2006, as cited in Lecture 5, Hollis, 2016). This model suggests that an individual with high competence will be negatively affected from weak environmental press, which will result in maladaptive behavior. In addition, individuals with low competence will negatively respond under high environmental press. In simple terms, based on what a person can handle too much or too little demand in the form of environmental stressors can both be detrimental to a person’s ability to thrive and adapt. The
