This graded project is intended to help you integrate the various communication techniques and skills youve been practicing and studying. The completed project will give your instructor an accurate gauge by which to measure your understanding and mastery of these important skills. More importantly, completion of the project gives you the opportunity to apply your new skills in a real-life situation and perhaps even show off a little in the process! For your graded project: write an essay of 500800 words.
Review the work you completed for the Nonverbal Listening Patterns exercise. Write a 500800 word essay on your experience with this exercise, discussing the following points: The steps you took to complete the Nonverbal Listening Patterns exercise What you learned about your own interpersonal communication behaviors or skills The steps you can take to improve or maintain each behavior or skill.
Process Step 1: Write from your point of view using the pronoun I. Use the past tense for your verbs since youre reporting on what has already occurred. Your first paragraph should summarize information about the exercisethe identity of the two people (supervisor, friend, relative, etc.), how well you know each person, where the exercise took place, when it occurred, and how long it took to complete it. Also, give the main topic of each conversation In your second paragraph, describe specific examples of your nonverbal listening behavior for posture, eye contact, gestures, and facial expressions with one of the people. (Be sure to indicate how comfortable you felt with that person.) Explain and analyze why you behaved in these ways during the conversation. Was your behavior appropriate for that conversation given what you have learned about proper communication skills? Why or why not?
In your third paragraph, provide the same type of discussion, but with the second person. In your fourth paragraph, continue by discussing at least three nonverbal listening behaviors or skills that you discovered about yourself during these conversations. You may discuss your weak skills, your strong skills, or a combination of the two. Since this essay is a self-analysis of your skills, youll want to identify both your weak and your strong points. With each skill you describe, also explain how you intend to improve the weaker skills and maintain the stronger skills that you identified in the previous paragraph. Exactly what can you do to make and keep your nonverbal listening behaviors effective? Also, discuss how you can determine your status and progress toward improvement.
In your final paragraph, discuss your reaction to the activity and analyze your nonverbal listening behaviors. Summarize the insights youve gained about your communication skills.
Step 2: Read your essay aloud and listen for areas where you may have missed some words or your sentences are awkwardly constructed. You may want to ask someone to read it to you exactly as you have written it. Listen for clear, logical flow of your ideas and discussion. Edit your essay carefully according to the standard conventions for academic compositions: coherent paragraph development, varied sentence structure, correct grammar, word usage, spelling, and punctuation. Remember to use the pronouns I, me, and my, since youre writing about your own experience from your point of view. Also, use the past tense for your verbs.
Step 3: Type the final draft of your essay using font Times New Roman, size 12. Double-space your essaythat means there is a blank line between each typed line. Indent the first line of each paragraph. Before printing your work, proofread once more for typos, spelling, and grammatical errors. Step 4: Submit your essay by following the instructions listed at the end of this book. Make sure to keep a copy of your work in case you need to resubmit.

Which Communication Style Best Describes You?Sort by date
Aggressive communication style best describes me. A scenario of my action can be seen some months ago when I woke up late for work I was so mad at myself. My younger sister overstayed in the bathroom as I stood by the door waiting for her. Time was running out, and I was so impatient, I was angry at my sister for taking that long. At the breakfast table, she accidentally stepped on me as she was passing by. Hell broke loose; I hurled all sorts of words I could imagine, I was talking at the top of my voice blaming her for my lateness. She went to school mad at me and felt humiliated by my action and communication style. Another good instance that would demonstrate my communication style is that I always find myself interrupting my coworkers when speaking during a work meeting. My close friend has talked to me about it, but I always find myself doing it over and over again. Some of the behaviors that I find myself engaging in are not very kind. I express my opinions and feelings and push for people to follow my way thereby violating their rights. As an aggressive speaker, I am very impulsive and have low tolerance levels. I usually harbor frustration, and I believe that everyone should be like me. I often interrupt when others are speaking. I talk a lot and attempt to use humiliation to dominate others while acting rudely and threateningly. I always have a habit of blaming others instead of taking responsibility for issues under by watch. The incident with my sister that morning was uncalled for, and I regret and wish I could take that back. I would like to have a passive kind of communication style. I am already aware of my problem. I will have to stop and think before uttering a word first.
Experiences And Barriers Communicating With OthersSort by date
Some of the factors that influence the way I communicate with other people are my own experiences over time. I always make a point of acknowledging people when they speak to me, because it bugs me when I speak to an individual or ask them something and I get no response. “Did you not hear me or you just couldn’t be bothered to answer me?”, I like to treat people by the golden rule: “Do unto others as you would like them do unto you”. I being civil with you, any chance you could return the gesture?. These kinds of experiences have shaped the way I now communicate with people. I’m fully aware that cultural characteristics can influence the way people communicate, and we should keep in mind that not all cultures are the same, some cultures have beliefs and behaviors that are like night and day in comparison with other cultures. I think it is very important to be tactful when we interface with people from different cultures and beliefs.
Importance Of Body LanguageSort by date
I never really pay enough attention to my body language until the last reading and I now know that in communication body language is extremely important. Considering that with gestures, expressions, or postures we can send the wrong messages to people and additionally these messages can have more influence that only a conversation or speech. I always have problems with my facial expressions and I think it’s one of my biggest mistakes, because I can’t control my expressionless face. Sometimes people think I am angry when I am not angry, this means that I am showing a completely different emotional response, I believe this is a good example on how we can give the wrong impression to our audience. After the lesson I learned that we must try to control every gesture, expression, or posture and be aware that our words are important, but our body language plays an important role in our daily interpersonal communication since body language can easily show our weakness, anxiety, nervousness, etc. On the other hand, good body language or nonverbal communication can bring success, a simple smile, good body posture, and a good eye contact can manifest how honest, successful, secure, self-confident we are. In fact good body language helps to deliver a positive and transparent message that can be easily interpreted and accepted by our audience. In conclusion we must be very careful when we are communicating with others, always be mindful of our body language.
My Listening SkillsSort by date
Listening is one of the most important skills to have in life. The way people listen is valuable As a person, I consider myself a good listener and on a scale of 1- 10, I would rate my listening skills 8 out of 10. I listen both for content and intention. Listening for content allows me to identify the main words of the speaker, significantly giving the words serious attention and focusing on the level of information available in the words of the speaker. On the other hand, listening with intent allows me to get into the frame of reference of the speaker, see their approach to the issue they are talking about, understand their paradigm and most importantly makes me understand their feelings. It drives me to understand the issues, goals and drives that hide on the point of view of the speaker. Given opportunity, one of the important areas I would want to improve on is paraphrasing. Good listening ability can be best identified by the ability of the listener to correctly clarify what they have listened to. In this respect, Paraphrasing is all about understanding the speakers message from your own words. It involves paying critical attention to the speaker as they speak, then using your own words to explain and understand what they said without changing the meaning of the message the speaker issued. I think listening is very important because it is the best mode to comprehend what people are talking about
Stress Triggers Points And Stress RelieveSort by date
One of the trigger points that causes me stress is an unfriendly or hostile working environment. Maintaining a living while having to sustain a household with a family can be stressful enough; and with the addition of an unwelcoming work environment can cause an enormous amount of stress. My advice to someone experiencing any part of this combination is simple. We should never overlook our mental and emotional health, our mental health is very important and all the things that cause us anxiety or stress must be set aside. We can do some exercise or meditation to help us to release our stress. My best therapy to relieve my stress is my dog I enjoy playing, walking with him and believe me I really enjoy doing it and it helps me to forget all my fears, stress or anxiety.
One conversation with my nurse manager I feel very relaxed and comfortable talking to her and I learned a lot from her because she has n excellent communication skills. Second conversation maybe a friend I feel anxious because she talk to much and look at my eyes for too long besides she always asks question out of contest .
