LEARNING OUTCOME:

• This assessment is designed to engage you in a comparative analysis of a range of government

(public) policies for sport in Australia, so that you develop a critical understanding of the ways in

which such policies are developed and implemented.

ASSESSMENT TOTAL:

• This assessment is an individual student task (it is not done in groups).

• Your written analysis is worth 50% of your total assessment.

• Total marks = 50 (Content [45 marks] + Presentation [5 marks]).

• Your policy analysis is due Friday June 3

• It will be submitted by uploading your analysis through the link at the bottom of the LMS page.

WORD LIMIT:

• You are required to individually complete 1 x 2,500-word written report (your cover page and

reference list are excluded from your word count).

• As you are addressing seven policy problems, each one should be covered in approximately 300 words

(i.e. 7 policy problems x 300 words each = approx. 2,100 words)

• This leaves approximately 400 words for your synthesis statement (conclusion).

• Any additional materials that are clearly relevant to each policy problem that you can discover

yourself (e.g.  Websites of sport organisations, journal articles, government reports, etc.)

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:

• You are required to prepare a comparative analysis of government (public) sport policy (not

organisational policy) that addresses the seven policy areas identified

in Weeks 6 to 12 of the Subject Guide.

• These seven policy areas are:

(1) Elite sport & Sport Pathways (Week 6);

(2) Sport Participation & Junior Sport (Week 7);

(3) Sport Betting (Week 8);

(4) Sport Broadcasting (Week 9);

(5) Drugs in Sport (Week 10);

(6) Stadia & Events (Week 11);

(7) Harassment & Discrimination (Week 12).

• You are required to focus on one stage of the “6-stage policy process

model” outlined in Chapter 2 (p. 28) of the Stewart et al. (2004) text.

That is, Stage 4 (“Policy implementation”). In other words, the implementation of policy is the lens

through which you are looking at a range of sport policy problems.
