This exam is due by the deadline posted on blackboard.  This is an individual submission (vs team work). Successful completion of this exam gives you a chance to score credit for the following course competencies.  In order to be evaluated for course credit, a completed technical document in the format specified must be submitted on blackboard before the due date indicated.

Need Identification:  Conduct an effective customer interview during which you *gain new information / insights* about the customer’s needs and use that information to develop an appropriate Point of View statement (user + need + insight)

The submission must be a written document of the design you would individually propose towards project 1. The format and content of the documentation is described in detail below.  This should be a cohesive, narrative, professional document. Format:

  • Title Page: Project name, Team number/name, names of all team members who participated
  • Document should be written as a formal technical document with appropriately formatted section headings (i.e. bold and/or underline).
  • Sections to include: Introduction, Need Identification, benchmarking, metrics and house of quality, references

Content:

  • Introduction
    • Introduce the project to someone who is not from EGR 102 and the end result that you plan to obtain.
  • Need Identification

 

  • Talk about the project constraints and budget. Include size specifications/rules and the formula used to calculate the score.
  • Create a Point of View statement (it must contain a description of your user, a description of their need and a description of an insight, user+need+insight) based on the project requirements/constraints.

 

  • Benchmarking
    • A description of at least three devices/products that are available on the market/for reference on the internet in tabular form as shown in Table 1.

For each of the devices, give the following in the text that talks about the table:

    • A completed Requirements Worksheet in the form of table 2. In table 2, you will provide a description of at least three requirements derived from the POV statement, including at least one functional and one physical requirement. Each requirement will occupy one row of the Requirements Worksheet
    • In the text referring to the requirements worksheet using its table number, write about how each of the requirements in the requirements worksheet addresses an important issue derived from the POV statement.
    • A completed Simplified House of Quality matrix using the template shown in Table 3. Your completed House of Quality should include your requirements, metrics, the completed user importance column, and the completed relationships table. Include this matrix in your competency assignment submission. Refer to the slides on how to complete the HoQ. Specifically, user importance should be completed with a 1-5 scale with 5 being the most important and 1 being the least important. The user importance and metric relationship should be represented by one of the three numbers three numbers: 1(low), 3 (med) and 9 (high) if there is a relationship or a left empty if there is no relationship

The exam will be graded for the following competencies

 

Professionalism:

 

The exam needs to be attempted for demonstrating the professionalism competency

‘Attempted’ means an effort should be shown to complete all sections of the exam (vs. submitting an empty or half-finished document)

 

Written Communication:

The exam needs to have all of the attributes listed below in order to have successfully demonstrated the Written Communication competency.

 

All of the following criteria must be met to demonstrate the competency:
