Efficiency of the use of the mother tongue, Spanish, in an English teaching setting.
Introduction
The argument on the use of Spanish, mother tongue, in an English language classrooms and its efficiency is a controversial issue. Despite of the Direct Method at the end of nineteenth century the mother tongue has been used as a teaching tool. For that reason, and to satisfy my ethical responsibility, I spoke with the principal of the school I work at, and I explained to her this research project and how it can benefit the students in our school. I included my intentions of interviewing coworkers, and use data from our school to compare and contrast the performance of the bilingual students to the students in the same grade level in general English classroom setting. This research intent to prove how beneficial is for English learners to use their mother tongue as a learning tool.
The most commonly used technique in this study was translation from mother language to the learning language. I will refer to ML for mother language and EL for the English. I will also take in consideration the different English learning stages, where EL1 for the students that have no English knowledge, EL 2 for intermedia level and EL3 for advance knowledge. At level EL3 student are in the transition level where they may be placed in a regular English class.
Sub question #1 Knowing for a fact that Spanish is used in the urban ESL classroom, how effective is its use as a learning tool.
Research questions
Research questions for this study are;
1) In many cases in a bilingual setting are two grade levels in the same classroom, how does that mix affect the student learning? 2) Can prohibition of L1 (Malay language) maximize the interest of using English in the classroom?
3) Do the students find beneficial the use of Spanish to learn English?
Theoretical
This research will take in consideration different theories and studies and refer to the theory that connect different hypothesis about how students develop English proficiency.
Background to the problem
Bilingual classroom setting is used in the urban school district for many years and governed by a set of laws. How actualized are the laws in place to the actual number and needs of the bilingual students in this urban area.
Statement of the problem Immigrant students in the urban area have difficulty to understand English. Therefore is hard for them to read books in English. Therefore they are in disadvantage in comparison with the student that speaks English.
Professional Significance of this Research
This research is very important to me as I am working as a bilingual teacher in an urban school district with many bilingual students coming from different Spanish speaking countries.
