Since little exists, what are some ideas on how to increase data-based studies of rural battered women? How would you go about reaching out to the women who are afraid to reveal their abuse?
Domestic violence against women is becoming an increasingly acknowledged problem in the United States. It is estimated that between two to four million women are physically abused every year, making a woman battered every 18 seconds. There are very few data-based studies of rural battered women that exist today, but in order to help these women more data needs to be collected (Johnson, 2000).
One way to increase the data that is available is to require mandatory reporting by rural health care providers. “Most observers now agree that providers need to routinely screen for violence, provide sensitive and nonjudgmental support, address patient safety, document the abuse and provide information about options and resources” (Johnson, 2000). Women that are abused are very likely to need medical attention. If the medical attention that is provided by health care providers is required to be reported to state agencies, there would be a chance of collecting and analyzing data to see if more resources may be needed in those areas and could be funded by the state.
One resource that is definitely lacking is that of education. So many women are afraid to reveal the abuse that they are going through for many different reasons. The problems regarding rural domestic violence are made worse by: poverty, lack of transportation, a shortage of health care providers, lack of education, lack of community programs, and lack of health insurance (Johnson, 2000). Because of these reasons it makes it very difficult for a woman to get out of an abusive situation. With increased resources in the rural areas it would be possible to develop an education program that would be targeted at these women, so that they would know that they can get out and that there is assistance available to help them. But without the money and personnel to deliver these services there will many women who continue to suffer in silence.
