Questions to facilitate discussions about developing a new training program:
· What performance issue will be addressed?
o What’s broken?
o Is this really a training problem or a motivational issue?
· What changes in performance are expected?
o Skills? Attitudes?
· How will we know when those changes have been achieved?
o Do we have a way to measure the change? Production output? Increase in X?
· How will the training be evaluated by the instructor?
o Smile sheets? Follow-up evaluations? Interviews?
· What structural or cultural changes are being done to support training?
o A class doesn’t change the system that may be the real problem?
· What information do we have to support the need for training?
o Have I done a needs assessment? Checked performance reviews?
· Do we design the training or do we let an outsider do it?
o How much do we trust a trainer? Do we approve curriculum?
· How much time will we spend doing the planning work?
o Planning is the critical part of training. Are we willing to commit the time?
· How much latitude can we give a trainer in developing and delivering a course/program?
