Advanced Research and Writing

Course Description

This course will provide an overview of current educational research and its use as an inquiry tool. Students will apply professional writing skills by completing a final research project for the Ed.S. program, and by writing and submitting an article for publication. This is the capstone course for the Ed.S. program, and it should be taken as the last course in the program. (Formerly EDUC 718)

Note: 700 level courses are only for students enrolled in the Ed.S. or Ed.D. program

Rationale

This course is designed to help educational specialist candidates master basic research design and analysis, along with gaining an understanding of writing for publication.

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1.

C. Discussion Board Forums (4)

Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, there will be 4 Discussion Board Forums in this course. The purpose of the Discussion Board Forums is to generate interaction among candidates in regard to current course topics. A thread of at least 400 words is to be completed. Each thread must have at least 1 citation in current APA format to support assertions. Two replies to classmate’s threads are to be submitted with at least 200 words each.

D. Article Reviews

This paper will consist of 3 separate 1-page reviews of 3 different articles. Each review must include a 1-paragraph summary of the article, a 1-paragraph analysis of the article, and a 1-paragraph summary of the importance of the article to the field of education. Include the citation for the article at the bottom of the page for each review.

E. Dissertation Reviews

This paper will consist of 2 separate 6-page reviews of 2 different doctoral dissertations. The candidate will locate 2 Liberty University doctoral dissertations written within the past 5 years. One of these dissertations must address the topic upon which the candidate is focusing proposed research for this course; the other dissertation must employ a research design type similar to that which the candidate is focusing proposed research for this course. The review must include a title page and references page, and for each dissertation: A 2-page summary of the dissertation, a 2-page analysis of the quality of the research conducted, and a 2-page personal analysis and practical application discussion, wherein the candidate will describe personal lessons learned from the dissertation and the relevance of the reviewed work within the field of education. The body of the paper must be at least 12 pages, must include references and citations for 2 dissertation sources, and must be formatted in current APA style.

F. Professional Publication Manuscript

Using the research topic of personal interest, the candidate will develop a complete manuscript for submission, for publication in a professional, scholarly, peer-reviewed journal, relevant to the proposed research topic, in the selected field of study. Submission guidelines must be followed (length, style, number and type of references) for the journal chosen. The candidate may actually submit the article for publication, pending instructor feedback. This manuscript is to be submitted in Blackboard.

G. Research Methodology Presentation

A PowerPoint presentation will be developed that addresses a research question/problem. The presentation must be 10–20 slides with a minimum of 5 articles from scholarly, peer-reviewed journals. This presentation is to be completed in LiveText. This presentation is to be submitted in LiveText.

C. LiveText Submission Policy

D. Late Assignment Policy

Course Assignments, including discussion boards, exams, and other graded assignments, should be submitted on time.

If the student is unable to complete an assignment on time, then he or she must contact the instructor immediately by email.

Assignments that are submitted after the due date without prior approval from the instructor will receive the following deductions:

1. Late assignments submitted within one week after the due date will receive a 10% deduction.

2. Assignments submitted more than one week and less than 2 weeks late will receive a 20% deduction.

3. Assignments submitted two weeks late or after the final date of the course will not be accepted.

4. Group projects, including group discussion board threads and/or replies, and assignments will not be accepted after the due date.

Special circumstances (e.g. death in the family, personal health issues) will be reviewed by the instructor on a case-by-case basis.
