Chapter Thirteen discusses the major elements of drama and distinguishes the form from other genres like the short story and poetry. Using the play Riders to the Sea(Synge) as an example, discuss what elements and qualities make drama unique as a literary form. Support your ideas with textual evidence from Synge’s play. In your post, take into consideration how the literary themes of Riders to the Searelate to the dramatic form.A drama “draws you into an imaginary experience” (Clugston, 2010, 13.0). It is thought “to be more intense than the short story”; plus it “reflects everyday life tensions more fully than most poems can” (Clugston, 2010, 13.0). In a drama, “you observe things happening right in front of you; you are aware of sounds, colors, lighting, clothing, and changing scenes” (Clugston, 2010, 13.0). There are two different types of drama: a comedy and a tragedy. In a tragedy the tone is serious, emotions are intense, and it explores the nature of human strengths (Clugston, 2010, 13.1). However, in a comedy the tone is light and entertaining, and it reveals human weakness (Clugston, 2010, 13.1). One of the main differences between drama and short story or poem is that a drama has audience who watch it as it is being performed. Another difference is that drama has a lot of dialogue which is performed by the actors on a stage. “Riders to the Sea” was written by John Millington Synge and is a tragedy about a mother and her constant grieving for her missing son. The drama starts out with the mother, Maurya, sitting and grieving the loss of her son Michael. Her daughters received a package containing some clothes that they needed to ID, but they did not want to do it in front of their mother. Meanwhile, Maurya refused to let her youngest son go to sea when knowing that before him his older brothers and father died. He goes off anyways to deliver a horse at a fair and ends up falling off of a cliff and dying. The drama ends up with Maurya saying, “They’re all gone now and there isn’t anything more the sea can do to me…No man at all can be living forever and we must be satisfied” (Clugston, 2010, ln. 280, 318). Do you agree or disagree that the play conveys much about humanity or about the human experience? What, if anything, does the work suggest about human beings or society? Support your views with textual details and analysis. In your response, address how Macbeth’s subject matter, themes, form, or other literary elements might (or might not) be characteristic of tragedy. How do tragic qualities of the play contribute (or not) to the story’s larger message(s)?At the end of Act I, before departing, the witches said this paradox “Fair is foul; and foul is fair” (Clugston, 2010, 1.1.14). The paradox means that good will be bad and bad will be good. I agree that Macbeth reveals a lot about human nature. It suggests that society can be bad and corrupted. After the witches visited Macbeth and told him about his prophesies he sent a letter to Lady Macbeth telling her of them and how one came true. After hearing that, she wanted the other ones to come true so badly that she made Macbeth kill the king and his sons so that they will be king and queen. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth invited King Duncan to eat at their home so that Macbeth would kill the king. Macbeth, though, was having doubts about it, and Lady Macbeth

made him do it. She was greedy and controlling all because of some prophesies. She told Macbeth that he didn’t have enough guts to go through with it and that she will do anything to be queen; even saying that she wanted the devil to come and take away her reproductive parts because she will not use them because they were too feminine. Lady Macbeth’s greed got way out of control and made Macbeth do corrupt things. Some of the themes of Macbethare ambition, deceit, and temptation. Great ambition ultimately brings ruin. For ignoring this ancient rule of living, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth pay with their lives. Deceit in Macbethis evil frequently wearing a pretty cloak. Early in the play, the witches declare that “fair is foul”, a paradox suggesting that whatever appears good is really bad. For example, murdering Duncan appears to be a “fair” idea to Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, but they soon discover that only “foul” has come of their deed, and that they very lives are in jeopardy. Temptation can defeat even the strongest human beings. On the battlefield, Macbeth was as strong as a lion and a leader of men, but when the witches tempt him with prophesies of him becoming king of Scotland, he succumbs to the lure of power. When his resolve weakens, Lady Macbeth fortified it with strong words. An imagery of Macbeth is darkness. Shakespeare casts a lot of darkness over the play to call attention to the evil deeds unfolding and the foul atmosphere in which they are taking place. At the beginning of the play, Shakespeare introduces an image of dark clouds suggested in the words spoken by the first witch: “When shall we three meet again/In thunder, lighting, or in rain?” (Clugston, 2010, 1.1.3-4). Another image in Macbethis blood which Shakespeare frequently presented in Macbeth. Sometimes it was the hot blood of Macbeth as he and Lady Macbeth plotted murder; sometimes it was the spilled innocent blood of their victims; and sometimes it was the blood of guilt that would not wash away, as with Lady Macbeth. The play Macbethsuggest that ambition, greed, power, and guilt cou
