Introduction
This week we will focus on the structure and function of cells, body tissues and membranes. As a student of Biology, and more specifically Human Anatomy and Physiology, it is important to understand that the human body is matter and all matter is composed of basic substances called elements. An atom is the smallest unit of an element that still retains the chemical and physical properties of the element. Each human cell began as an atom (smallest), that transformed into cells, that formed tissues, that combined to form organs, and finally, a human organism (largest). All of these steps use chemicals and energy for formation and functioning. Membranes are structures that protect cells by creating a barrier between intracellular and extracellular activities. Membranes also preserve the cell’s shape. Understanding these basic principles and the theories and scientists behind these philosophies, will provide the foundation for students of human anatomy and physiology.
