Write an extended definition of the term you have selected, and write for a non-expert reader (think of the class, or U students in general, as your audience).
In the planning stage, start by defining your subject, purpose, readers, and context. Then, using various sources, research the meaning of the word. When you write the extended definition, consider using examples, analogies, comparison, etymology, negation, or other techniques to explain the term. If you directly quote any outside sources, you must use quotation marks, in-text citation, and a list of sources at the end of the paper. But quotation should be used sparingly if at all; the intent is for you to explain in your own words.
In choosing a topic consider important terms in your field or discipline, especially those that are imperfectly understood by most people. But you don’t have to pick a term from your field. Do you have other areas of expertise? You could choose a term that you know well, and that you think others want to or should know better. Or is there a subject currently engaging your curiosity, something you want to learn about, something you would like to know, or that you think you should know? Whichever way you go—whether you follow your curiosity or rely on your expertise—try to pick a term that most people could not readily define.
The definition should be about 1000 words in length ( Four pages, double-spaced) and include documentation of sources. In a works cited section include sources of direct quotations and any other sources you end up relying upon.
