Expectations for the Research Project Proposal.

Ideally, your research project proposal should be suitable for submission to the Biology Department’s Junior Fellowship competition, which usually has an early-May submission deadline. (Actual submission of the proposal to the competition is not required.) If you do want to submit your proposal you need a faculty sponsor in Biology, and indeed a conversation with a faculty member could be a good way to get ideas for research projects and suggestions for articles to read. Length. The stated length for the research project proposal for last year’s Junior Fellowship application was 1-2 single-spaced pages. (As of today, April 6, this year’s application hasn’t been posted yet.) Since we use double-space pages, this means 2-4 double-spaced pages for us. From last year’s successful proposals, it’s clearly OK to use an additional page for references. Tone and audience. You are writing for an audience of Biology professors, and you are striving to convince them that you are in command of the ideas and the language of your field. That said, remember that Biology is a broad field that includes ecologists, physiologists, and cell biologists. You can assume that your readership knows the intro-bio basics of all of these subfields, but do not assume that they know the arcane technical details of your subfield. On the course Moodle page there are links to a few successful proposals from last year. These happen to be on cellular and molecular topics, but should feel free to propose a project in any life-science field. The best proposal formats have a few things in common: 1. An introduction (often titled “Background”). The introduction, or background, section should lay out the context and introduce the overarching scientific issue or question at stake. It should also mention the particular study system (the model organism, or local ecosystem and field sites, or group of species to be compared) and ideally should explain why it is a good system for addressing the question. (If you or your lab group have already learned something about this study system you can also describe it in this section, or in a separate section titled “Preliminary Results”). 2. Specific aims (or “objectives” or “goals”). A good proposal is specific about its goals. These are usually given in a single short sentence or phrase, either a question to be answered or a task to be accomplished. 3. Methods. Describe exactly how you will accomplish your aims, in as much detail as space allows.

The paper should be scientifically accurate and thoroughly consistent with the the principles of biology, chemistry, and physics. 2 points. Feasibility. Your project should be do-able. Ideally it should be do-able by you here at UMass within one academic year — though if you want to fudge this and propose a more ambitious project, that’s okay. 1 point. Good clear style. Follow the advice in Pinker’s Chapters 2 and 3, particularly in the introduction and the significance section. It’s okay to get a little bit more jargony if necessary, especially when describing methods. 2 points. Careful editing. Edit your writing to check for errors of grammar, punctuation, and spelling, to the best of your ability. The more of Pinker we read the sounder will be our basis for doing this.
