This is not a typical book review, but an analytical essay about Chinese cities based on two books.
Here are the two books:
- “The Corpse Walker: Real Life Stories: China From the Bottom Up” by Liao Yiwu and 2. “Years of Red Dust: Stories of Shanghai” by Qiu Xiaolong.
These two books all talk about China through short stories. This paper is for a geography class called “Cities of East Asia”, so the paper should focus on cities that are mentioned in these two books rather than the stories in these books.
Please do not summarize any plot and content of these two books! My professor really hates plot summary!!!!!!! Please focus only on analysis, this is really important.
You can develop your own viewpoints and analysis about Chinese cities based on the book. In other words, use the books as a springboard for the analysis of Chinese cities. For example, all stories of the second book happened in Shanghai, so you can talks about how Shanghai was transformed from the poor China period to today’s rich and powerful China. You can talk about Shanghai’s function as a city in different periods; what makes it become a modern world city; the characteristics of Shanghai as a Chinese big city; how it is different from and same as other East Asian big cities such as Hong kong and Tokyo. Both books need to be related in this paper. Develop analysis of Chinese cities based on these two books, and make your points by using some Chinese cities that are mentioned in these books as examples to exemplify your points.
Intro: Begin with a general overview of the argument/concept you are analyzing.
Main body:develop your analysis, and please do not summarize or cited too much about the content of the books, because this is not a typical book review and my professor hates that. Several sentences should be fine.
