Purpose of Assignment

The assignment relates to these objectives:
• summarize the value of the scientific investigation process
• reflect on the tasks and analysis performed in the weekly Virtual Physics Labs
• apply and connect the scientific investigation process to professional activities
• apply critical thinking skills
• prepare a formal presentation consistent with APA guidelines
Assignment Instructions (from the Syllabus)

WRITE a 350- to 700-word written summary OR

CREATE a 16-22 slide PowerPoint presentation OR

CREATE a 2.5 – 4 minute video

in which you discuss the value of • EACH step of the scientific investigation process.

The scientific method was used to conduct experiments through generating a testable question, making predictions, designing and conducting experiments, collecting data, interpreting data, and drawing conclusions.

REFER to:
• at least one Virtual Physics Lab (VPL) conducted in this course AND
• a common investigative process from your professional life (e.g. diagnosing an ailment at the doctor’s office, etc.)
as examples of EACH step of the scientific method,

BE SPECIFIC when describing each step of the examples.

INCLUDE visuals to illustrate each step and your examples (required for the PowerPoint and video; optional for the written summary)

You MUST complete research on the scientific method.

• REFER at least TWO academic references that are NOT the textbook or other Materials used for this course and include citations.

WITHIN your presentation, you MUST ADDRESS:
• Why is it valuable to make a prediction or hypothesis BEFORE you begin your investigation (VPLs AND real-life)?
• HOW did you choose the appropriate tools for your investigation (VPLs AND real-life)?
• Compare and contrast a “dependent variable” and an “independent variable.” Refer to the VPL and your real-life scenario to illustrate the difference.
• Describe at least TWO different ways to display data collected from an investigation. In which situations is each display the most effective?
Tips for Success

This essay is a summary of the steps of the scientific investigation process that you connect to examples from the Virtual Physics Labs and your professional or daily activities. It is acceptable to discuss your experiences from the first-person point of view.

• Avoid all second-person references (“you, “your,” etc).

Also, please remember the importance of incorporating supporting ideas from your research on the scientific method; the textbook does NOT cover this topic well. The research you conduct serves to strengthen and validate your points, making them more credible to the reader. This is your opportunity to combine your ideas and observations with those we discussed the Learning Activities.

An important part of effectively communicating your ideas is demonstrating clear and professional academic writing. Therefore, it is recommended that you structure the paper / powerpoint / video in a college-level format that contains:
• a clear introduction
• body with at least one paragraph or two slides per step of the scientific investigation process, with in-text citations as needed
• a conclusion
• a reference page
An effective powerpoint must be:
• legible – maximum SIX words across & SIX words down per slide
• include headings, bullet points, and graphics that relate and add to the main ideas of each slide
