Cost and Quality in Health Care The purpose of this paper is to describe the relationship between health care cost and quality. While ranking the highest in health care spending, U.S. ranked last in health care quality. Health care cost is extremely high in the U.S, with a per capita on health care spending at least 50 percent greater than comparable economically developed countries (Burke & Ryan, 2014). In 2011, U.S. health care sector spent about $2.7 trillion, which is accounted for 17.9 percent of gross domestic product (GDP); this is almost twice the GDP in 1980 (The White House, 2013, p. 161). Moreover, in previous surveys reviewing consumers and doctors about medical practices and their views of their health delivery systems, U.S. failed to meet better health outcomes, and ranked last in accessible, safe, and efficient health care (Burke & Ryan, 2014). CMS assist individuals who are seniors, under the age of 21, with low-income, pregnant, or disabled to obtain health insurance (CMS, n.d.a). CMS took part in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to help lower costs and provide better care. Private Agency The Joint Commission (TJC) is an independent and nonprofit organization which accredits and certifies many health care organizations and programs all over the U.S. The mission of TJC (2015a, p. 1) is “to continuously improve health care for the public, in collaboration with other stakeholders, by evaluating health care organizations and inspiring them
