In society today, there are many different cultures. Each family has a history all its own, and as time moves forward, each family adds something new. It may be adding a new tradition, new beliefs, even new family members, even become a blended family, which will in turn create a new family culture. The way each family celebrates holidays and birthdays, even how they celebrate death, will be different from another. There may even be differences in the same culture/religion within the same family. Ethnic backgrounds may also be different. Health beliefs and traditions will vary based on each one’s cultural heritage. One thing remains the same. Family, no matter what. We all have our own “family”. As a health care professional, one must be proficient with this diverse cultural heritage. While obtaining the information required for the heritage assessment, three different families were assessed. The areas of focus are on these three cultures, Canadian, which is the authors own, German, and American. There are different health traditions in each of these cultures. Heritage is defined as “something inherited at birth, such as personal characteristics, status and possessions.
