There is a gene that controls pulp color in the grapefruit. This gene has two alleles- the yellow allele which makes the pulp yellow and the red allele which makes the pulp red. We cross a grapefruit that is homozygous for the yellow allele w/ a grapefruit that is homozygous for the red allele. All their offspring (F1 generation) have red pulp. When we cross the F1 siblings with each other most of their offspring (F2 generation) have red pulp, but some have yellow pulp. Answer the following questions with the information given.

1. Which allele is dominant? Which allele is recessive?

2. What is the genotype of the individual that displays the recessive trait? Is this individual homozygous or heterozygous?

3. what is the “phenotype” of a heterozygous grapefruit?

4. what is the genotype of the F1 generation (offspring of the two original grapefruit)? Are they homozygous or heterozygous?

5. Which allele(s) can an F1 grapefruit pass down to an offspring (what allele(s) do the gametes of an F1 individual have)?

6. what percentage of the F2 generation has yellow pulp? What percentage has red pulp?

Now, let’s use what we have learned from 1-6 above…
7. would it be possible for 2 parents that have the dominant trait to produce offspring that has the recessive trait? Explain

8. let’s say we mate an individual with a dominant trait with an individual that has the recessive trait- is it possible for them to have offspring that has the recessive trait (hint: consider the possible genotypes of the parent with the dominant trait)

A gene that determines antenna length in flies has two alleles. The short allele specifies short antenna. The long allele codes for long antennae. When you mate a fly that has long antennae (assume it’s homozygous) with a fly that has short antennae (assume it’s homozygous), ALL the offspring (F1 generation) have MEDIUM-length antenna (no one has long or short antenna). Answer the following questions with the information given

1. what allele(s) do the offspring with MEDIUM-length antenna (F1 generation) have?

2. what is this pattern of inheritance called?
A. Polygenic inheritance
B. simple dominance
C. incomplete dominance or codominance
D. sex-linked genes

3. does the antenna length gene have “dominant” or “recessive” alleles?

4. draw a punnett square of the F1 cross (i.e., mate two flies that have MEDIUM- length antenna ) what type of antennae do their offspring have?
