Data, Information, Knowledge, and Wisdom
The American Nurses Association states that “Nursing Informatics (NI) is a specialty that incorporates nursing science, computer science, and information science to control and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in the nursing practice” (2008, p.1). The use of data, information, knowledge, and wisdom is very essential to maintain nursing and informatics; for nurses to accurately perform in improving the quality of patient care. For instance in research, it is necessary to sort through data into valid information, and to transfer that information into knowledge, and then lastly to convert that knowledge into wisdom. The rationale of gathering significant data, information, and knowledge is to make sensible evaluations. The purpose of this paper is to inform the reader on the necessary steps it takes to conduct a research on a clinical question, how to organize that information, how to use that information to gain knowledge and wisdom, and lastly to utilize that wisdom in their practice.
How to Conduct a Literature Research
There are several steps in performing a literature review search. The very initial step is to formulate a research question. My research question is “How accurate is the echocardiogram compared to the beta natriueretic peptide (BNP) screening to rule out congestive heart failure (CHF)?” CHF is a very serious and chronic medical condition that has a high mortality and morbidity rate. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), that there are approximately 5.7 million people that suffer from heart failure and that there are 550,000 million people who are newly diagnosed each year in the United States. There is also approximately 287,000 deaths are year that are associated with heart failure. (CDC, 2012).
The next step would be to research for evidence that pertains to the related research question. There are several databases available at the Walden library. The database of CINHAL and Medline was utilized, the databases were used concurrently. Searching these databases together provided a more widespread search compared to that of researching each database separately. As soon as a database is discovered, a search is then performed utilizing diverse keyword tactics. In doing this, locating the most appropriate articles and information on the specified topic is done more easily. The keywords “CHF and BNP” are then typed in the search field. This will then generate articles that pertain to the research question. The be successful in taking the information that is pertinent, the title of the articles are then read and chosen; the heading link is then clicked on to open the abstract of the article. The material is then read to assess if the article would contain noteworthy information that is related to the research question. Once the article or articles are selected with the most relevant information, the full text is then either printed or downloaded to the computer for further reference.
How to Organize Useful Information
There is no power in unorganized information. For the information to be powerful, it must be organized and promptly available. It must be required that information be acted upon. The next step is the make a decision on how all the information should be utilized that was obtained in the literature research. A decision on how to utilize the information that has been collected is now needed. The most relevant articles that have been printed are then read over gain in the information is then highlighted. The articles that have pertinent information that has been saved on the computer are then read over again and printed out; this information is then highlighted as well. Developing tactics for categorizing knowledge is crucial, so that is may simply and swiftly be referenced for a later date. Once the relevant information is highlighted, this information is then typed in a document or jotted down on paper for note taking so as to organize it into relevant areas that is needed for one’s personal knowledge or for a document that may be needed for a class.
Knowledge is Gained Wisdom
Knowledge can be very useful when it is applied. So in turn, it is necessary for nurses to use the newly obtained knowledge for wisdom. “Wisdom is defined as the appropriate us or knowledge to manage and solve human problems” (McGonigle, 2012). Obtaining relevant knowledge is at times quite effortless. Although applying the knowledge and using it towards wisdom, this can become quite tricky. Wisdom is applied knowledge, regardless of where it is obtained. Doing what you are familiar with and utilizing it, is expanded wisdom. Using knowledge is a very crucial element that divides knowledgeable individuals from others.
When knowledge is applied by a nurse, and he or she experiences the sense of accomplishment, wisdom has been gained. When wisdom is gained, one must learn from their previous mistakes or the mistakes of those around them, and to continue to seek additional knowledge. Wisdom in the nursing field comes with practice through experiences. A seasoned nurse, who arranges and deciphers information through understanding and integration of that knowledge, then will apply it with understanding, empathy and wisdom.
Summary
Data, information, knowledge, and wisdom are all applied in nursing informatics and in the practice of nursing. The use of computers can only display the data, information and knowledge. Nurses are then needed to develop the wisdom by what data, information and knowledge that have been obta…………
