The Purpose of this assignment is for you to explore a single form of punishment in two different settings, which could be contrasting societies / countries (ancient or modern), or the same society at different historical periods. Your task is to explain the differences or the reasons for the changes. As with the first assignment, you need to be wary of the distinction between how a society justifies adopting a punishment (e.g. deterring crime) and what actually happens. Again, you might need to consider whether how a culture justifies what it does is really why it does it.
You might want to examine how different societies treat particular kinds of criminal or crime, and the reasons – political, religious, philosophical – why they differ in their responses and systems of punishment. This requires a knowledge of the wider social context, and perhaps political framework, than the first assignment.
