Purpose of scholarly writing:

Scholarly writing. Disciplines are discourse communities which use well-established conventions, rules and practices to govern scholarly communication. Majoring in a discipline involves becoming a member of that discourse community?learning to think and communicate like other members of the discipline. Scholarly writing includes various forms used to develop and communicate knowledge according to the conventions and standards of the discipline or field of study. Thus, the primary purpose is to communicate with members of the scholarly community and uses the conventions appropriate to the scholarly community. In other words, the purpose of such writing is to communicate about the ideas, theories, inquiry methods, and research findings of the discipline.

The significant element is that the text is written for a professional audience?and therefore must conform to the conventions and style of that discourse community. The obvious and most common example of scholarly writing is the article in a scholarly journal. Other types of scholarly writing include grant proposals, laboratory reports, field study reports, critical reviews (of a book, an article, software, a visual object, etc.), review essays, opinion pieces to a professional journal, scholarly response articles, scholarly essays.
