Empowerment is the process of enabling or authorizing an individual to think, behaves, take action, and control work and decision making in autonomous ways. Empowerment is the state of feeling self-empowered to take control of one’s own destiny. Empowerment comes from the individual. Avoid thinking of it as something that one individual does for another. This is one of the problems organizations have experienced with the concept of empowerment. Empowerment is a core concept of the new management model. Empowerment and ownership are social aspects of organizing that are based on efficacy and initiative, not just on roles and requirements (Heathfield, 2006).
In order to create empowerment at my organization, it needs to loosen of the reins and the pass trust onto its employees. This means moving away from dictating the staff by allowing him or her to access information that he or she was not previously privy to and offering the employee an extended freedom of choice. Empowerment also represents shift away from the traditional relationship between employers and staff to one who is built on emotions. Employees feel more committed to his or her job and employer when the employee empowerment approach is embraced.
