The theme within the story is basically that revenge is overpowering, leading to the betrayal of one who trusts the avenger. The story focuses on the way in which a man (Montresor) uses another man’s (Fortunato) passion against him and follows through on his corrupt plan by developing a variety of satirical actions to make him feel more powerful as he is vindicating himself. Montresor, knowing how much Fortunato loves wine, continuously uses his love against him throughout the story, pretending he is looking out for his best interest at times, when in fact, he is having fun humiliating him by making him fall victim to his own greed, and making Fortunato set himself up for his own death.
