What is your definition of “spiritual care?” How does it differ or accord with the description given in the topic readings? Explain

When a patient have a need for spiritual care it consist of being understanding and allow time for the individual to express their values. A patient’s belief in a higher power that may inspire hope, seek resolution, and transcend physical and conscious constraints. It’s not a time to focus on our philosophies, but help the patient to reflect on his or her standards. Gaining trust will open up a patient to talk about their inner feeling and as a nurse sometime just listening can be what the patient needs. Reaching out to their preferred religious community can help elevate an inner peace. Having someone to pray with them within the same belief can be satisfying. According to our reading spirituality was a person relationship with God, but later reference began to view it as a life principle. “Sometimes spiritual care means simply being present, praying, sharing from Scripture, offering a word of witness and encouragement or participating in a healing service ( Miller,2006)”. There is no difference in our explanation in spiritual care, it’s about understanding what can be done to aide a patient to heal through prayer or being present for comfort.

Spiritual care to me is being an active listener and an advocate for my patients. As a nurse I view all patients as human beings and not from a textbook standpoint. We are exposed to a very diverse population people of many different religion culture and beliefs. While I might not believe in what my patient believes in, I am compelled to listen when a patient seeks or need spiritual care. Whether it’s getting the priest, pastor, or social services that’s my responsibility to meet that need. Then there is the physical part of spiritual care that your beliefs are not involved just holding someone hand when they are afraid is sometimes enough.
I can remember a patient I had, he had a colon resection and was on a lot of pain medication. Unfortunately, the side effects were unpleasant and caused him to hallucinate, I remember sitting with him for quite sometime just helping him feel safe. When he is in the area, he stops by to say hello and say thank you. Recommend his friends to our floor is health care is needed. “they have awesome nurses” is what he says. Makes my heart warm.
In this week’s reading spiritual care is defined as “putting people in touch with God” This is not always possible as we live in a diverse world and must respect each person religion and beliefs.
