Maxwell, does not directly speak about the leadership traits of the Lominger Leadership Architect Library. However, it seems obvious after reading Maxwell’s book that there are many similarities between them. In discussing his 5 levels of leadership, Maxwell speaks extensively about several character traits that are also on the Lominger Leadership Architect Library.
However, it’s important to be aware that Maxwell would not find all of the traits on the LLAL to be important for good leadership. Tobetter understand Maxwell’s point of view we will look at the five most important and the five least important competencies from the LLAL.
Here are the five top competencies, or character traits, that pertain to both Maxwell and the LLAL:Self-Knowledge- According to Maxwell, before a person can be a good leader they have to first know themselves.
In fact, Maxwell says “one of the secrets of connecting with people and building relationships is knowing and liking yourself.”(Maxwell, 2011, p. 105-106).
Maxwell says that in order to lead people you must make a connection with them. However, he says the only way to make a connection is to first like yourself.
The only way to do that, he says, is to be self-aware. Work to identify and understand the things you do not like about yourself. Accept the things you cannot change and work on improving the things about yourself that you can change.
If this step is skipped a person is not able to genuinely connect with others. Since this is the foundation for effective leadership, if this step is ignored or done incompletely, leadership growth will suffer.Self-Development- This competency goes hand in hand with the first, self-knowledge.
Self-development is an on-going process, according to Maxwell. In fact, his book is based on the idea that leadership requires constant growth. In order to progress from one level to the next, one must be in a constant state of growth.
Without constant self-development, a person will get stuck at one level and will never advance to the next stageof effective leadership. However, it is imperative to not assume that reaching the top level, Level 5- The Pinnacle, means that self-development is complete.
To the contrary, Maxwell believes that an effective leader is one that constantly works to improve; it is a lifelong commitment, not just a skill that can be mastered and forgotten about. In fact, Maxwell goes so far as to say “to be effective, leaders must always be learners.
You can never arrive-you can only strive to get better. If you’re through learning, you’re through.”(Maxwell, 2011, p. 239) In other words, a leader cannot reach Level 5 and thinkhis work is done. If he does this, he will find himself losing his effectiveness.

Caring about Direct Reports- This competency is one that is probably often overlooked asnot being very important. Maxwell, however, puts great emphasis on this characteristic, and for good reason. In order to be an effective leader, you must be able to influence others.
However, people do not generally allow themselves to be influenced easily. If people feel their leader is trying to genuinely connect with them, a relationship can be built. From this relationship, the leader can demonstrate that he or she truly cares about each direct report individually as a person.
Yes, the leader often makes decisions based on company directives or for the good of the team as a whole. If individuals feel, however, that the leader values them as a person and genuinely cares about them, they be more willing to accept the decisions and changes made by the leader.
This concept is discussed extensively in Maxwell’s Level 2- Permission chapter of the book. While this is discussed in other places of the book as well, page 91 sums it up wonderfully: “You can care for people without leading them, but you cannot lead them effectively beyond Level 1 without caring for them” [ CITATION Max11 \l 1033 ].
The reason is because people willnot allow themselves to be lead unless they feel valued and respected as individuals. People will also not trust leaders that do not take into account their people. Instead, they will feel as they are insignificant and do not matter.
This quickly leads to a drop in moraleand in severe cases could even result in an “us against them” mentality between leaders and followers.Building Effective Teams- Level 3 of Maxwell’s 5 levels of leadership discusses team building in detail. Maxwell says “team building is one of my favorite aspects of leading people. A good team is always greater than the sum of its parts and is able to accomplish more than individuals working alone.”(Maxwell, 2011, p.155)
In other words, without teamwork, people, and their leaders, will not be nearly as successful as they could be if they worked together. The leader has several roles in building effective teams. The leader needs to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of each team member and plan accordingly.
The leader also has to provide a clear vision and keep the team on track to achieving the goal.Developing Direct Reports and Others- Level 4 of Maxwell’s book focuses entirely on people development. The basic premise of people development is that the more resourcesare put into people, the better the return.
Helping people grow professionally and personally, particularly in their leadership skills, will pay dividends for the organization. Maxwell very clearly expresses how important he feels developing others is when he says“if you want the best for your organization, you need to invest in its people. That’s where the greatest potential is. Only by helping your people reach their potential will your organization reach its potential.”(Maxwell, 2011, p.185)
Clearly, there are many competencies on the LLAL list that coincide with Maxwell’s principles. However, there are some on the list that Maxwell does not give much importance.
They are:Command Skills- This competency speaks to being a tough, charge forward type of leader. Putting your foot down, essentially, if necessary. While it’s true that in the real world every leader has to make unpopular decisions, one can make those decisions using a bit softer approach than that of being in com……….
