Existentialists do not seek out traditional values. Existentialists seek to overcome society standards, herd mentality and themselves and to find one’s essence. They believe that by overcoming these things, yourself, and freely enjoying life on earth instead of seeking something orderly and meaningful, you can gain something greater than heaven. They believe that “A person is alone in determining what he or she would do without any external influences. The test of personal morality is what one might do if no others would know” (Wyatt, 2015). These individuals are responsible for their decisions and since free will is so important to existentialists, individual decisions that negatively affect other’s free will are the most important so, choices must be made to create the best outcome or freedom for the most amount of people (Wyatt, 2015). The last statement fits under the teleological school of thought, but I do not feel that these ideas fit wholly under any of the schools of thought.
Nietzsche was an existentialist who sought out truth, reality, and value based on the “Will to Power” (Pecorino and Sullivan 2002). He believed that there were always going to be different classes of people due to their desire to rule over one another and force their will onto others. He believed that humans are egocentric and self-absorbed by nature. From his point of view, “to manipulate characters of fragility and frailty, to indulge in one’s supremacy, and to pamper one’s self with praise, are preferably admirable traits of the good” (Pecorino and Sullivan 2002). I cannot agree with his ideas. I do believe that there are some people who are egoists and only seek personal gain, but not to the extent that it is human nature or right. He believed traits I consider to be morally good character traits as distractions of the inferior to cope with their quality of life. I can see how his beliefs could be interpreted negatively. Adler on the other hand did not agree with Nietzwche’s Will to Power (Pecorino and Sullivan 2002). He believed that individuals should have an interest in the welfare of their neighbor. He did not believe in supremacy and thought the only way an individual could escape the unhealthy and neurotic ideas of inferiorities and superiority was to practice interest in the welfare of others.
